Between 1812 and 1841, Fort Ross (just 24 miles away) became the southern-most Russian settlement on the American continent. The settlement was established to provide agricultural produce for other Russian settlements in Alaska and became the first shipbuilding site in California. Trappers based at Fort Ross made their way inland along the Russian River, hence its name. Fort Ross is now a California State Park and open year round.

Every July, history buffs converge on Duncan's Mills for the largest Civil War re-enactment this side of the Mississippi. Civil War Days visitors can interact with the soldiers and civilians of the Civil War era and visit the camps of the Union and Confederacy sides.

For those fascinated by the history of flight, the Pacific Coast Air Museum in Santa Rosa has a wonderful collection of vintage to contemporary aircraft as well as aviation artifacts and holds related events from time to time throughout the year.
